Educating Children About Pure Bred Dogs

The future of the sport of pure bred dogs lies in capturing the interest of our youth.  That interest may be sparked by something as simple as a lesson about dogs taught at school or as part of an after school activity. The AKC Public Education Department has a variety of  materials available for teachers and youth group leaders, including lesson plans, presentations, brochures, coloring books, bookmarks, posters and books.  The AKC also offers games and puzzles for children that encourage responsible dog ownership and safe behavior around dogs.  If you are a teacher, Boy or Girl Scout leader or involved with 4H clubs or other youth organizations, consider taking advantage of these resources.  Information and access to a wide-variety of materials can be found on the AKC website under Public Education, Educators and Youth Groups. You never know when a child you taught may breed a future champion or even Best in Show.

The Clumber Spaniel Club of America also encourages youth to participate in Junior Showmanship. Here is a link to the information about Junior Showmanship on this website and on the AKC website.
